Why Are Vinyl Records So Expensive? Will Prices Come Down?

Consumer demand for vinyl records continues to defy all odds in the digital age. 

By the end of 2022, total units sold in the US capped out at 43.5 million records (up 4.2% from 41.7 million in 2021—according to this report).

Given that $30-$40 price tags are not uncommon on your average LP, it’s quite remarkable to see such sustained growth in a physical music format. 

On top of this, consider that a ten bucks a month Spotify subscription gives you virtually untapped access to decades of music at your fingertips. Incredible…

So Why Are Vinyl LPs So Expensive? 

There’s a lot to consider here, so we’ll break the topics down into a multitude of factors affecting market prices.

At the heart of the issue is simple supply and demand. Consumer demand for vinyl records continues to rise, and quite simply, the current production capacity is struggling to keep up with the thirst for records.

Lack of Pressing Plants & Production Bottlenecks

According to this database, there are currently just over 360 known companies involved in the pressing, cutting, or general manufacturing process of making records.

Very few pressing plants worldwide have the capacity to handle very large record runs, and it’s a known fact that typical lead times for production can be anywhere up to nine months from start to completion.

This absurd waiting time has led many smaller companies outside of the major labels to take matters into their own hands and open their own pressing facilities. Most recently, Jack White famously called on major labels to start operating their own pressing facilities once again, having invested his own money to build a facility for Third Man Record.

Soon after, the record subscription service VMP (Vinyl Me, Please) joined the growing number of independent operators announcing plans to build their own facility.

Supply Chain Issues

World events over recent years haven’t exactly helped curtail production times. Back in early 2020, a fire ripped through the Apollo/Transco production facility leaving only one remaining lacquer production factory in the entire world.

For reference, “lacquers” are lacquer-coated aluminium discs used in the mastering process. The mastering engineer will cut the finished recording onto the lacquer, which is then used to create the stamper and start the record production process.

This catestrophic blow to the supply chain of such a fundamental part of vinyl production ripped through the industry, causing shortages, at least in the short term. 

The change in circumstances also forced the industry to consider alternative manufacturing methods, such as DMM (Direct Metal Mastering).

DMM was co-developed by Neumann and Teldec. Instead of engraving the groove into a soft lacquer-coated aluminum disc, a DMM lathe engraves the audio signal directly onto a hard metal copper-plated master disk. 

Critics often dismiss DMM masters as inferior, but at the industry’s time of need, and with so many livelihoods on the line, alternatives had to be explored while the industry plugged the hole left by Apollo/Transco.

As we all know, 2020 led us into a global crisis of unprecedented lockdowns and the resulting economic impact of inflation that put further pressure on supply chains and labor costs—all of which placed upward pressure on the price of consumer goods.

According to Alchemey at Air Studios Mastering Engineer, Barry Grint even the cost buying supplies has increased over the last year. In a recent conversation with Sound Matters, he explained how this affects his business as a mastering house. “The biggest effect on pricing for mastering is the increase in courier costs”, Barry explains. “The bought costs for Lacquers has increased because of increased freight charges and the shipping of lacquers has also nearly trebled.”

Besides current world affairs, Barry also feels the tendency towards premium reissues means records are costing more than in previous years, stating “I think labels are also delivering better value products, whether it be Half Speed cuts, heavyweight vinyl, or premium booklets and packaging. There are some much cheaper reissues, but they often have poor quality audio, and/or packaging”.

Considering vinyl is a luxury market in today’s digital society, it seems good business sense for labels to focus on premium quality instead of unexceptional and ordinary products to shift in volume.  

Record Store Day – Pros & Cons

Some industry pundits position a degree of blame on Record Store Day. Founded in 2008 to help secure the future of independent record stores, the annual event drives countless record collectors to stores searching for special limited edition releases. 

While the event does put a positive spotlight on great independent record stores, critics of the event have expressed their frustration around major labels and their tendency to dominate the event with reissues and legacy acts to make a quick buck. 

Indie labels and artists simply can’t compete with their buying power, and this puts extra strain on an already stretched production capacity. The result: longer production lead times, higher prices, and less consumer choice…

Used Record Prices – A Different Kettle of Fish

The price of used records is a separate issue but related, partly due to consumer demand.

Record collectors often mourn the loss of affordable used records and the joy of picking up classic albums at thrift stores for just a few spare notes.

Sadly, as the popularity of vinyl records became common knowledge, the days of cheap charity and thrift store vinyl are long gone.

Stores became savvy to the increasing value of used records, and with online marketplaces, such as Discogs, making it simple and quick to gauge the value of vintage records, real bargains are few and far between.

More often than not, prices are much too high for the condition of the records as many stores or resellers are at best naive when it comes to grading used records. 

Why is New Vinyl So Expensive – The Bottom Line

The ever-rising cost of vinyl records is a multifaceted problem. Any market where supply can’t meet demand will inevitably see higher prices at the cash register. 

Supply chain issues, corporate behaviour, and world events naturally compound the issue, but many of these problems can be fixed by increasing production capacity.

We are seeing a growth in pressing facilities, which is great news, but with the increase in demand showing no signs of stopping, it’ll be some time yet before capacity reaches a point where competition leads to falling prices.

Vinyl remains a niche interest, albeit with impressive growth. For this growth to sustain, there’s no doubt the price needs to come down. 

Under the right set of circumstances, digital streaming and physical music formats can offer us the best of both worlds. Arguably the growing popularity of vinyl owes much of its success to its unique position as an antidote to increased digitization. Like yin and yang, there’s much to be said for one needing the other in pursuit of balance.

It’s utter nonsense. The new Peter Gabriel record is 40 quid. Why? Taylor Swift, 40 quid. What’s going on? A lot of vinyl releases are cheap pre-presses with sleeves that look photocopied. I have a friend who gets his music cut on vinyl, costs him a fiver per disc. If he’s paying that then it’ll be a lot less for the major labels. Pathetic money grabbing and overexcitement because a few people are buying records again. It really annoys me because I like the fact you can buy vinyl again and I want people to buy them. Make it accessible otherwise sales will flatten at best or fall down again

Apropos GenEral vinyl record collecting I’d have to say
It’s a matter of money and fetish.

After 45 years of buying and selling Records
I’d have to say most records made before the so-called
” demise” of vinyl records in the late 1980s
are actually worthless.(the exception proves the rule)

Remember— vinyl records are essentially PVC—
another non-renewable resource>>>>>OIL.

This overpricing ????’s gotta stop we’re being scammed plain and simple! Supply and demand hasn’t got a Da*n thing to do with it! They are ripping us of because it doesn’t cost that much to produce a album! I remember paying between $3-$5 for a brand new album! And $.50 and $2 for a used album from Cats music and a mom and pop album store in my hometown! There’s a place called McKay used books & CD’s in Knoxville Tennessee close to where I live and they buy and sell and if you purchase lets say a AC/DC record they’ll charge you $49.99 for Back in Black! This kind of Scam really ticks me off

What I really would like to know is the even more drastic difference in price gap for records that market at say $29.99 and after being sold out on the artist personal website for merch, finding it selling or reselling for hundreds. Knowing that these artist have not amassed such a status yet. There’s no way that it’s worth such money. I’d like to know what this trend is about because for the people such as myself who enjoy crate digging and just a leisurely stroll around record stores seeing what catches the eye. The fun has been taken out of it for me because now I can’t afford to buy and support music I enjoy. This problem is absurd. Has anyone else discovered this? I see it a lot with artist of today rather than older more revered artist.

There are 2 main causes for records which originally sold for say $29.99 to be selling for hundreds on the resale market not too long afterwards.

1 – Although vinyl records are extremely popular right now, they are still a niche market. Companies now only press perhaps thousands of copies of most records, compared to the millions of copies that used to be pressed when records were the dominant music format. Therefore, almost all modern day records are “Limited Edition” (regardless whether it’s hyped as Limited Edition or not)

Most modern day vinyl release runs are “spoken for” before they even get pressed. Then they get shipped out immediately after being pressed. Record labels no longer have warehouses full of stock, so when it sells out, that’s it.

2 – Flippers! There are an ever increasing number of people who buy records as an “investment”. They are not music lovers. Many don’t even own a turntable. They buy records for the sole purpose of reselling those records at a later date for greatly inflated prices (Like after it’s no longer available in stores or from the record label)

Modern day record pressing runs sell out quickly because they are pressed in smaller quantities. And because music lovers now have to compete with the Flippers who will buy as many copies as they can get their hands on. Which only ensures that the runs sell out all the more quickly. This often leaves music lovers with a choice between buying from the resale market or going without

When record shopping in this day and age, if you see a record you want, you almost have to buy it immediately! It might not be there next week or tomorrow or even a couple hours later. Gotta buy it right now or possibly risk never seeing it again. Not such a casual and relaxed thing anymore…

Why not thin records down, get away from the “180 Gram” LP. Owned my store since 1980 and sold way more 140-150 Gram records. Not to mention less damage because boxes would not be as heavy, just saying.

I also find the trend of two records for one album very frustrating and what feels like a excuse to put the price up. Yes, the quality today is obviously much better than the 70’s/80’s pressings but it’d much rather play one record per album. Or at least have a option to buy one, two and/or a colour variant, with them priced accordingly.

Completely Agree!
This is absolutely plain greed. There are so many good sounding albums that exceed the “formal” ~40min limit of one album. In many cases a good, maybe not hi-end, but appropriate sound record could be pressed up to about one hour of playing per record, especially if the content is dynamic like acoustic music, ballads or jazz, especially if it’s not significantly compressed – it would be doable. I understand that constantly loud, electronic (or not) music with plenty of bass won’t be suitable for longer playing vinyl pressing, but most music is not constantly loud and bassy. I can bring so many examples of excellent sounding albums with long playing times. It is just a matter of decision.
I’m even getting frustrated more from all these 45rpm-double-LP releases – they’re trying to force it on double albums. Such a pain.

There’s a major disparity between high street retailers and on line stores. HMV have a remastered Led Zep III for £39.99, whereas on eBay you can get the same (supposedly new) for around £25 with postage. Thing with eBay is that you’re in the Lap of the Gods when it comes to actual quality! I’ve been disappointed many times to discover that a so called ‘nearly mint’ turns out to have scuffs and marks you’d normally associate with a ‘very good’. Album covers can also fall prey to incorrect descriptions even though there’s usually a picture to look at. I’d buy more stuff from HMV if their prices matched the eBay stores which in turn would reduce the prices the sellers on eBay would sell them for! Competition huh?! Most times though eBay’s new stuff is pretty much okay and they deserve a pat on the back for having this vast market place. HMV need to cater to the constant enthusiast as well as the ‘one album’ every few months buyer. They used to have a loyalty card that was really helpful but nowadays they seem more content to pitch Japanese toys than make a big deal out of their vinyl and then of course there’s that damn price! Shame there’s not more local record fairs for crate digging or independent record stores although I do have to recommend SJ’s in Stratford for keeping their prices below the average and blowing a quality raspberry in the direction of His Master’s Voice!

Don’t forget that a lot of the plants are refusing to get pressing equipment out of storage in warehouses and train the staff to run them because they claim that ‘it’s just a passing fad’ but I suspect the real thing behind it is keeping supply low makes certain prices are much, much higher – it’s our old friend greed again.
Yet there is the claim above that RSD is causing the problem??

A lot of record-pressing equipment was junked in the late ’90s – lathes, metal stamper systems, and presses and that’s just one part of the problem.

In this day and age of “The Great “Vinyl Resurgence” it’s extremely unlikely that any companies would be “holding back” on bringing that old record pressing equipment out of storage. Any companies that still had functional record pressing equipment would have taken it out of storage so they can use it for themselves or sell it.

These days, having a functional record press is almost as good as having a functional money printing machine. Any company that could press more records would be more than happy to do it. Happy and laughing all the way to the bank.

Living in outback Australia most of my purchases are done online and must congratulate most suppliers of well packed records and the ones that offer free postage .I’m 76 and bought up with 78s to start with and worked my way up to now I just love handling them and reading the covers and artwork ,I have no interest in streaming or memory sticks and I’m mainly interested these days in colour vinyl and have in the last few years bought well over 200 some costing hundreds of dollars ,and still have all of my LPs bought over my lifetime ,it’s a shame but I feel I must stop costs wise and I’ve run out of space and living in a dust Bowl and hi heat in summers it’s more difficult,many thanks to this site for the interesting topics and wish all analog collectors every success in this hobby .

What I want to know is why one on line store sold me a Adel 30 record for $15.00 (but, by accident I ordered two) I brought 1 into my local record store to sell it I see others on line going for $35-$40.00 & they told me it’s only worth $15.00. He clearly had 1 in his rack for $38.00 it was the exact same one as I had now why is it?

A discussion of higher prices today needs to be compared with the currency value at the time of comparison. For example a $20 lp today would have cost $5.56 in1980. Based on inflation value of the dollar in the US. Your results may vary.

My record collection amassed over the years numbers in the thousands with very little spent in real terms having had the luxury of charity shops, friends getting rid of their records and cheaper prices. My 13 year old niece has now got into vinyl after requesting a record player last Christmas unlike myself who used to spend my pocket money on records she has to save up to spend £20 plus on a record not being funny but 180g or coloured vinyl means nothing to her, this year she has managed to collect 10 records which she was playing on a £50.00 deck!! ( I’ve now given her my old rega p3] prices need to come down to allow the younger generation to get meaningful collections thus ensuring this new found love isn’t just a fad.
